Class notes 11/18/10

A little more on age-specific fertility patterns:

From the US census international database, from census bureau website

Fertility estimates by 5 year age groups.

7 age groups 5 years wide cover fertility period. It is ideal to illustrate this is by making an animated graph.

Instructions for making age-specific fertility patterns animated graph:

First: name block of data that has age specific rates. Highlight cell c5 hold down shift key press end right then end down. All is highlighted. Go to cell A5 hold shift key press end then down.

This makes it go to edges of any block of data immediately.

Highlight countries and name them in the top left corner box.

Open new workbook and write index in A2 and highlight B2 and write “1” and name that cell index.

In cell C2 write: =index(countries, index) press enter. You can change numbers in B2 and get different country names in C2.

From C4 to I4(ages 15 – 45 in 5 group increment) highlight the 7 rows below and in first cell write =index(data.index,0) all at the same time press the control shift and enter keys.

You can then change the number for B2 and you get the different fertility rates for each country.
Click on insert x-y scatter plot with straight lines and points.

X values 15-45

Y values 7 fertility rates below in lines C5 to I5.

Right click on y- axis format axis and pick “maximum is fixed.”

For x-axis choose minimum to be 15 and maximum to be 50 and both fixed.

Click on ribbon on top left corner click the round button with the windows logo. Go to control and click on popular and select developer.

Select scroll bar that’s the 3rd one on the 2nd row. Place it on the graph. Right click on scroll and click format control. Click on control tab current value: 2 min value 226.

Click on country name and press ok.

You can scroll through entire dataset and observe the different fertility patterns.

By looking at differences in fertility among countries we can begin to ask why they exist.

Cultural factors affect fertility in different countries like North Korea (concentrated between 20 and 35 translates into small families with older mothers) and in Muslim sub-Saharan countries generally have high rates of fertility at younger ages.

Copy line 218 c-i and copy to 2nd workbook c22 and that allow you to use the US as a reference group.

Right click on graph then select data. Add a series called US the x-values same as before y-values C22-I22. Now US fertility serves as reference to contrast other countries.

Cultural differences influence variations in fertility patters not just biology.
